An AI writing tool that wants your scrutiny.

EthiWrite is a writing environment for academic essays: a document editor, a source library the student builds (uploaded PDFs, papers from the open OpenAlex index, web pages, and books), citation formatting in APA, MLA, and Chicago, and AI assistance that is deliberately constrained to feedback, planning, and short accepted suggestions.

It does not ghostwrite. The guided coach describes what a section needs and critiques what the student wrote; it is instructed never to produce the essay’s sentences. The autocomplete offers suggestions of roughly a sentence, visibly marked, which the student explicitly accepts, rejects, or rewrites — comparable in scale to predictive text, not to prompt-based generation.

It cannot invent citations. Suggested citations are restricted to passages retrieved from the student’s own attached sources; reference entries are generated from stored bibliographic records using the official Citation Style Language definitions. A claim with no supporting source in the student’s library yields no citation.

The examiner only analyzes. Examiner Mode maps the argument and flags unsupported claims and structural gaps — it has no capacity to rewrite the text. It exists to teach students to see their drafts the way a grader does.

Most current university guidance distinguishes between AI as assistance — feedback, planning, language-level suggestions, citation mechanics — and AI as generationof submitted work. EthiWrite is built on that line: the thesis, the argument, and the prose are the student’s; the tool contributes structured feedback and grounded citation support. Where an instructor’s policy is stricter — for instance, disallowing predictive suggestions — students can work entirely in Guided mode, where the AI writes nothing at all.

When a student writes with EthiWrite: the research question, thesis, argument structure, and every sentence of sustained prose are theirs. What they received help with: locating real sources, formatting references correctly, a plan for covering the assignment, and critique of drafts in progress — the assistance a good writing center provides, made available at 11pm before the deadline.
