APA title page builder for student and professional papers

Fill in the fields for an APA 7 student or professional title page, sometimes called an APA cover page. The preview follows the APA layout as you type, and you can download it as a .docx. It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Build your title page

The full title of your paper, with any subtitle after a colon.

One name per line, as you sign your work. No titles or degrees.

Your department and university, separated by a comma.

The course number and name, as your institution lists them.

Your instructor's name, in the form they prefer.

Written out as APA asks, such as October 28, 2026.

What goes on an APA 7 title page

Student paper

  • Page number at the top right. No running head unless your instructor asks for one.
  • Title in bold, centred, three or four lines down from the top.
  • One blank line, then your name, your department and university, the course number and name, your instructor and the due date, each on its own centred line.

Professional paper

  • Running head in capitals at the top left, with the page number at the top right.
  • Title in bold, centred, three or four lines down from the top.
  • One blank line, then the authors and their affiliation.
  • The author note in the lower half of the page, under the bold, centred heading "Author Note". It is optional, and the builder leaves it out when the field is empty.

Everything is double spaced, with 1 inch margins.

What it doesn't do

It builds the title page only. The rest of the paper, such as the abstract and reference list, is up to you.

Authors with different affiliations need superscript numbers that link each name to its affiliation. The builder puts every author on one byline and the affiliation on one line, so add the numbers yourself in Word.

Title case can't tell which words are proper nouns or acronyms you typed in lowercase. Check the title, or turn title case off to keep it exactly as typed.

Your instructor's or journal's instructions come first. If they differ from APA, follow them.

FAQ

Is the APA title page builder free?
Yes. You don't need an account, and there is no limit on how often you use it.
Do you store what I type?
No. The builder runs in your browser. Your details and the Word file are never sent to our server.
What is the difference between a student and a professional APA title page?
A student title page lists the course, instructor and due date and has only the page number in the header. A professional title page, for a manuscript you submit to a journal, leaves those out and adds a running head and an author note.
Is an APA cover page the same as an APA title page?
Yes. APA calls it the title page; many students and instructors call it the cover page.
Does a student paper need a running head in APA 7?
No. APA 7 dropped the running head for student papers. Only the page number goes in the header, unless your instructor asks for a running head.
Which font should I use?
APA 7 accepts several fonts. The builder offers two common ones, Times New Roman 12 and Calibri 11. Use the one your instructor asks for, and the same font in the rest of the paper.
Can I edit the Word file?
Yes. The .docx opens in Word, Google Docs and Pages with the double spacing, centring and page number already set, so you can start your paper on the next page.
