What the checker looks at

Thesis
Whether the draft makes a clear, arguable claim, and whether the rest of the essay keeps to it.
Structure
Whether the paragraphs come in an order that builds the argument, and whether each one has a clear job.
Evidence and citation
Whether claims are backed by evidence, and whether the evidence is cited. The checker can't see your sources, so it doesn't say whether a citation is real.
Clarity
Whether a reader can follow each sentence and paragraph without guessing what you mean.

What the levels mean

These levels are indicative. They are not an instructor's grade, and they don't predict one. Use them to decide what to look at first.

Needs work
This part of the draft has a gap a reader would notice. Start here.
Developing
The basics are there, but some of it is thin or uneven.
Strong
This part already does its job. The findings point to what makes it work.

What it won't do

It is designed not to rewrite your sentences or give you text to paste in. Each finding quotes a short part of your draft and says what it shows, and each criterion ends with questions for you to answer in your own words. If the model's answer offers rewritten text, the checker rejects it and shows no feedback.

It reads one draft of up to 1,500 words at a time. For a longer essay, check one section at a time.

It doesn't check whether your references are real. For that, use the free reference checker.

FAQ

Is the essay checker free?
Yes. You don't need an account. Each check takes some work to run, so you can send a few checks an hour. After that, the tool asks you to wait before the next one.
How does the essay checker work?
It uses a language model to give feedback. The model reads your draft against four criteria, and the checker only shows findings whose quote appears word for word in your draft.
Do you store my essay?
No. Your draft and the assignment prompt go to our server, which sends them to the model and sends the feedback back to your browser. We don't save the draft, the prompt or the feedback.
Is the level a grade?
No. Each level is indicative and is not an instructor's grade. Your instructor marks against their own rubric, which the checker can't see.
Will it rewrite my essay?
It is designed not to. It points to parts of your draft and asks you questions. The checker looks for answers that offer rewritten text and rejects them instead of showing them. Any changes are yours to write, so the essay stays your own work.
Why add the assignment prompt?
With the prompt, the checker can say whether your thesis answers the question you were set. Without it, the feedback looks at the draft on its own.
My essay is longer than 1,500 words. What can I do?
Check one section at a time, such as the introduction and first body paragraphs, then the next part.
