Estimate based on about 275 words per page: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double spaced, 1 inch margins on US letter paper.

How pages are estimated

The page count is an estimate. It divides your word count by a words-per-page figure for the setup you choose. The real number depends on paragraph breaks, headings, quotations and how long your words are.

The figures start from a US letter page with 1 inch margins, 12 pt and double spaced: about 275 words in Times New Roman, 265 in Calibri and 240 in Arial. Single spacing doubles the figure and 1.5 spacing multiplies it by 4/3. A smaller font fits more words on each line and more lines on the page, so the figure scales with the square of 12 divided by the size. Wider or narrower margins scale it with the text area left on the page.

What the counter leaves out

Many instructors don't count the reference list or in-text citations toward a word limit. Check your assignment brief, then switch each exclusion on or off to match it.

The reference list is everything after a line that says only "References", "Reference list", "Works Cited" or "Bibliography". In-text citations are brackets that hold an author and year, such as (Smith, 2020) or (Lee & Park, 2019, p. 4), or square brackets that hold only numbers, such as [3] or [2, 5]. Headings are short lines with no closing punctuation, or lines starting with #. The counter lists everything it left out, with the number of words in each.

FAQ

How many pages is 1,000 words?
About 3.6 pages double spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1 inch margins, or about 1.8 pages single spaced. In Arial the same words fill about 4.2 pages double spaced, because Arial is wider.
Is the page count exact?
No. It is an estimate from a words-per-page figure. Paragraph breaks, headings, block quotations and long words all change how much fits on a page. Open your document in your word processor for the exact count.
Does it count words without the references?
Yes. Switch on "Leave out the reference list" and it stops counting at a heading that says References, Reference list, Works Cited or Bibliography. It shows how many words the list held.
Does it leave out in-text citations?
Yes, if you switch that on. It leaves out author-date citations in round brackets, such as (Smith, 2020), and numbered citations such as [3]. It shows how many it found and how many words they held.
Do you store the text I paste?
No. The counting runs in your browser. Nothing you paste or type is sent to our server.
Is it free?
Yes. You don't need an account.
