Copy.ai vs Paperpal: a generator or an editor for your coursework?

Paperpal, if you've written something and want it better. It works inside Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Overleaf, with grammar and tone suggestions trained on scholarly edits and 30+ pre-submission checks against journal standards. Copy.ai is a marketing writer for sales and operations teams, and its site lists nothing for essays, sources or citations.

Copy.ai belongs on the side at most, for its free summarizer or outline generator. Paperpal's free plan is the better place for a student to start, provided 200 grammar edits a month is enough.

Where you do the writing

Paperpal comes to your document: an MS Word add-in, and Chrome and Edge extensions that support Google Docs and Overleaf. You keep writing in the editor your course already uses, and the suggestions, trained on scholarly edits, appear there.

Copy.ai's writing happens in its chat and generators. The Chat plan gives five seats unlimited words in chat and unlimited chat projects, with models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini. That's a sensible setup for a marketing team, and nothing on its homepage, pricing page or free tools index is about essays.

Sources and references

Paperpal cites from the references and PDFs you upload, or from its own search of 250M+ research articles. Research and Cite also extracts insights from PDFs and generates citations in 10,000+ styles, and the paid plans add reference checks, measured by the word.

Copy.ai's public pages don't describe academic sources at all. Workflow credits can buy “internet research”, with no word on how that research is cited.

How far each will write for you

Paperpal is mostly an editor of your text, but not editing-only. The homepage offers to “Draft with suggestions grounded in your sources”, and its paraphraser restructures your sentences. Asked about Paperpal on r/research, commenters were sceptical of AI editing for research writing and warned that it can blur what you meant.

Copy.ai starts from generation. Its free tools include a paragraph generator and a paragraph rewriter, its chat writes whatever you ask, and the Paragraph Generator's own page pitches drafting essays and research-paper sections. For a student, that's where the academic-integrity risk sits.

Checks before you submit

This is Paperpal's strongest suit. The 30+ pre-submission checks hold your text against the language and formatting standards of journals, and the plagiarism check compares it with 99B+ sources before your institution runs its own review. Paperpal invited most of its Trustpilot reviewers, and what they praise is the AI-detection checks.

Copy.ai's nearest equivalent is the grammar checker among its free tools. None of the Copy.ai features covered here is a plagiarism, AI-detection or journal check.

Paperpal prices by region; Copy.ai lists one price

Paperpal's free plan needs no credit card: 200 grammar edits a month, 5 a day each of AI writing tools and research Q&A with citation lookup, 5 files a month of chat with papers, and lite plagiarism and journal-fit reports. Prime and Pro are billed monthly or annually, but their prices only appear once the pricing page loads them for your region, which makes costs hard to compare in advance.

What the paid plans add is clearer. Prime gives 20k grammar edits a month and 10k words of plagiarism and reference checks; Pro makes grammar edits and AI detection unlimited, with 30k words of checks.

Copy.ai's Chat plan is $29 billed monthly, or $24 a month billed annually. Its pricing page lists no free plan, though its free tools advertise 2,000 free words a month on sign-up, with limits that are unverified. On Trustpilot, its reviewers complain of charges that continued after they cancelled.

Which should you choose?

Choose Copy.ai if you write marketing or sales copy and want a chat workspace for five people with models from several AI providers. For coursework, its free summarizer or outline generator is as far as it should go.

Choose Paperpal if you already have a draft and want academic language polish, plagiarism checks and pre-submission checks inside Word, Google Docs or Overleaf. Start on the free plan and see whether its monthly allowance of grammar edits gets you through an essay.

If neither fits because you need help building the argument rather than polishing it, EthiWrite is our tool for that. Examiner Mode maps your argument and flags unsupported claims without rewriting anything. Its citations come in APA, MLA and Chicago only, so Paperpal's 10,000+ styles will serve you better if your department wants something else.

FAQ

Is Paperpal free?
There's a free plan with no credit card, but it's small: 200 grammar edits a month, 5 paraphrase or AI-review uses a day, and only lite plagiarism and AI-detection reports.
How much does Paperpal cost?
It depends where you are. Prime and Pro are billed monthly or annually, and the pricing page loads prices for your region instead of listing them, so check it from the country you'll pay in.
Which one checks an essay for plagiarism?
Paperpal. Its check compares your text with 99B+ sources, and the free plan gets a lite report. None of the Copy.ai features covered on this page is a plagiarism check.
Will Paperpal change what I meant?
It can. Commenters on r/research warned that AI editing can blur what you meant in research writing, and Paperpal's paraphraser restructures sentences. Accept suggestions one at a time and reread each.
Can I draft in Copy.ai and polish in Paperpal?
You could, but polishing generated text doesn't make it your own work. Copy.ai's Paragraph Generator pitches itself for “writing long-form essays”, and Paperpal's paraphraser would only restructure those sentences further. Read your course's AI policy before you try it.
