Copy.ai alternatives: what to use for essays, and what to use for marketing
Copy.ai calls itself “The First AI-Native GTM Platform”, built for marketing, sales and operations teams. Its free Paragraph Generator tells a different story: it suggests using it for “writing long-form essays” and to “draft literature reviews or discussion sections”. So it's worth being clear about what Copy.ai is, and what to use instead.
For a cited essay, Jenni AI and Paperpal find papers and format citations, Grammarly gives feedback on a draft, and Thesify reviews a long one. EthiWrite, which we make, cites only from sources you added. If you're on a marketing team, Jasper and Writesonic are the like-for-like options.

Why people move on from Copy.ai
The pricing has a cliff. After the five-seat Chat plan, self-serve pricing jumps to team plans billed annually, starting at $12,000 a year for 75 seats. Fine for a sales org; a long way from a student budget, or a freelancer's.
For students, the free tools are the issue. The Paragraph Generator pitches essays and literature reviews, and the free AI Humanizer aims to make AI text “indistinguishable from human-written text”. Copy.ai takes no position on student work. Paste a generated paragraph into an essay and humanize it, and you're submitting text you didn't write with the label filed off.
Reviews of the service are rough. Trustpilot reviewers report charges continuing after cancelling, lost logins, saved work vanishing after updates, and support that replies slowly or not at all. Several long-time users say quality and value have slipped compared with general chatbots such as ChatGPT.
For a sales or marketing team, it has real strengths. Chat gives five people unlimited words and models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini, Workflows chain research, content generation and tool integrations into repeatable processes, and a minority of Trustpilot reviewers say it worked well for their business and praise the team.
What to look for in a Copy.ai alternative
A source behind every claim
For an essay, where a sentence comes from matters as much as how it reads. Pick a tool that shows you the paper behind each citation, so you can check it says what you claim.
Writing help, not paragraphs
A generator hands you paragraphs. A writing assistant helps you make your own: finding sources, testing the argument, fixing the prose. For coursework, the second is what you want.
One person, one price
Team pricing suits teams. Copy.ai's cheapest plan is sold as five seats; as a student, look for a free tier or a monthly plan for one person.
The best Copy.ai alternatives
1. EthiWrite
Full disclosure: this is our tool.
EthiWrite is the reverse of a paragraph generator. It won't write paragraphs from a prompt: Guided mode writes nothing, and Autocomplete offers short continuations, a sentence at a time and capped around thirty words. Its citation labels come from the source record, and only for sources in your Library.
Examiner Mode flags unsupported claims, thin evidence and structural gaps before you submit, and can't rewrite your text. Uploading, paper search, citing and export are never metered on any plan, and there's a free one. The catch, next to Copy.ai's unlimited chat words: every EthiWrite quota is finite, on every plan.

EthiWrite editor with the Guide panel open (demo account, email blurred). Best for: Students who want to write a cited essay themselves rather than paste one together.
2. Jenni AI
Jenni AI is built for the essays Copy.ai's Paragraph Generator pitches at, positioned to help “create essays, papers, and citations”. It brings sources in from PDFs, Zotero, Mendeley or a 200M+ paper search, links its suggested sentences to their place in the PDF, and formats in 10,000+ styles.
It still writes. Autocomplete suggests sentences one after another, and in GPTZero's review (GPTZero sells a detector) an introduction built mostly from accepted suggestions was flagged as AI. Limit it to your library and you at least control the sources. Free is 10 autocompletes a day; Plus is $12 a month and Pro $29.

Jenni AI editor, signed in to a free account. Best for: Students who want an essay editor with real citations instead of a paragraph generator.
3. Paperpal
Paperpal is mostly an editor of your own text. Suggestions on grammar and tone are trained on scholarly edits, 30+ pre-submission checks test language and formatting against journal standards, and it runs in Word, Google Docs and Overleaf. Its Research and Cite feature covers 250M+ articles, with citations in 10,000+ styles.
Free covers 200 grammar edits a month plus five daily uses of the AI writing tools; paid prices load by region. It does offer to draft “with suggestions grounded in your sources”, which at least ties the text to your own sources.

Paperpal editor on its built-in sample document, signed in to a free account. Best for: Students who want academic polish and real citations on their own draft.
4. Grammarly
Grammarly sells a Humanizer too, but where Copy.ai's aims at text “indistinguishable from human-written text”, Grammarly says its own “is not intended to bypass AI detectors.” Its free docs editor includes AI Grader, which estimates a grade from your rubric, and Authorship, which records how you wrote the draft.
Free use is metered, with 100 AI prompts a month; Pro is $144 a year or $30 month to month. Citation Finder suggests web sources in APA, MLA or Chicago without naming the databases it searches. Students on Reddit say their own work scored high on AI detectors after Grammarly edits.

Grammarly doc with Grammarly's built-in demo essay, signed in to a free account. Best for: Students who want feedback, and an authorship record, on work they wrote.
5. Thesify
Thesify is for the long essay or thesis that needs a critique. Its Reviewer gives structured feedback on argument, clarity and methodology against academic rubrics, on documents up to 100,000 words, and you can highlight text to search 200+ million references and add citations to the draft.
There's no free plan: a single review is €14.95, or €24.95 a month for three. It says in its FAQ that it won't write your paper, though the newer Coauthor workspace has drafting agents and marks which text was written by AI and which by a person.

Thesify reviewer, signed in to a free account, before any document is uploaded. Best for: Graduate students who want rubric feedback before a supervisor reads the draft.
6. Jasper
For marketing teams, Jasper is the nearest like-for-like. It's built to “Put AI agents to work for marketing”, keeps output on brand with stored Brand Voices, Knowledge assets and Audiences, and offers Canvas apps such as a Blog Post app that drafts for a target audience.
It costs more per person: Pro is $59 a month per seat billed yearly, or $69 month to month, where $29 a month buys five Copy.ai Chat seats. There's no free plan, only a 7-day trial, and Trustpilot complaints centre on billing, cancellation and email-only support.

Jasper public homepage, signed out (the app needs an account). Best for: Marketing teams that want brand-voice controls and don't mind paying per seat.
7. Writesonic
Writesonic suits teams whose work is SEO content. Its AI Article Writer analyses search results and competitor pages, then produces long-form articles (“3,000 to 8,000 words”) built “to rank on Google AND get cited in AI search”. Every paid plan adds AI-visibility tracking and site audits.
Starter is $79 a month billed annually, for 15 articles. No free plan is listed, but the 7-day trial needs no card. NoGood, a marketing agency that recommends a rival tool, found the output uneven and generic without detailed prompts, and its factual accuracy inconsistent.

Writesonic public homepage, signed out (the article writer needs an account). Best for: Content teams producing long SEO articles.

FAQ
- Is Copy.ai free?
- Its single-purpose tools are labelled free, and a sign-up prompt on them advertises “2,000 free words per month” with no credit card. The pricing page lists no free plan, though, so what a free account gets today is unverified.
- Does Copy.ai cite sources?
- None of its public pages describe finding, citing or formatting academic sources. Workflow credits can pay for “internet research”, but Copy.ai doesn't say whether or how that research is cited.
- What does Copy.ai cost for one person?
- The cheapest plan, Chat, isn't priced per person: it's $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month billed $288 a year, for five seats with unlimited words in chat.
- Why does Copy.ai show up on Jenni AI alternatives lists?
- It appears on Latka's company-data listing of Jenni AI competitors and on a roundup by a deals marketplace that sells a Copy.ai discount. Its own homepage, pricing page and free tools index list nothing for essays, sources or citations.
