Compare

Grammarly vs Writefull: which suits a student's writing?

If you write in Overleaf, this comparison is short. Writefull checks language directly in your LaTeX source and can generate LaTeX tables and equations, and its feedback comes from models trained on published papers. Grammarly's student agents work in Grammarly docs, and its Authorship record can be turned on in Word, Google Docs and Canvas.

Everyone else has a real choice. Grammarly gives feedback on the assignment: a grade estimate against your rubric and a read on what a reader takes away. Writefull works on your sentences, with feedback trained on published papers. Pick by which of those you're missing.

Where each one works

Writefull works inside Microsoft Word and Overleaf. On r/academia, LaTeX users say they value that it understands Overleaf source. Grammarly's agents work in Grammarly docs, and Authorship can be turned on in Word, Google Docs and Canvas submissions.

On privacy, Writefull makes a specific promise. It says it never keeps your text or trains its AI on it, and it asks your consent before text goes to third-party AI services. If you're writing up unpublished results, read that line against your lab's rules.

Sentence polish versus assignment feedback

Writefull's language feedback is tuned to academic writing, and one user's informal grammar test on r/Grammarly ranked it alongside Grammarly. It has its critics. In the same r/academia thread, researchers describe it correcting mathematics as if it were prose, imposing a serial comma on British English, and twisting their meaning. Accept its suggestions one at a time.

Grammarly reaches past the sentence. AI Grader takes your assignment details and rubric, estimates a grade and gives personalized feedback, though Grammarly says the estimate shouldn't be taken as your actual grade. Reader Reactions flags where readers could get confused and what they'll probably take away.

Citations: one suggests sources, one only spots gaps

Grammarly's Citation Finder flags claims that need support, suggests web-based sources, and formats and inserts the citation in APA, MLA or Chicago. It doesn't say which databases it searches, so treat each suggestion as a lead.

Writefull doesn't find, manage or format sources at all. Writefull Cite flags sentences that look like they need a citation, but it's sold to institutions only, so you'd get it through your university, if at all. Pair Writefull with a reference manager.

Generated text, and the AI-detector worry

Both will write when asked. Grammarly's agents can draft new text directly into the editor, and AI Grader's suggestions include AI rewrites, which Grammarly warns could get your work flagged for AI use. On Reddit, students describe high detector scores on essays they wrote themselves and only edited with Grammarly. Authorship is the counterweight: it records what was typed, pasted or AI-assisted, and you choose whether to share the report.

Writefull mostly edits your own sentences, but its Abstract Generator, Title Generator and Ask AI produce new text on request. The company also now promotes a separate product, Papers AI, to “Draft the whole manuscript”. That's a different product from the checker, but it's there if you go looking.

The cheaper one depends on how you pay

On annual billing, Grammarly costs less: Pro is $144 a year (the $12 a month on its plans page is that figure spread over twelve months) against US$150 for Writefull Premium. Month to month it flips, with Writefull at US$21 and Grammarly at $30. Grammarly's plans page also offers a free trial. Writefull's Group plan is US$285 a year for two seats, if you're splitting with a labmate.

Both have free plans, metered differently. Grammarly's caps AI Grader at three pieces of feedback once a day, Citation Finder at five citations a day and AI prompts at 100 a month. Writefull gives a limited quota of each feature, and some users on r/academia ran through it quickly. The same thread has reports of charges after cancelling and an unsubscribe option that was hard to find, and Grammarly's Trustpilot reviewers are split between refused refunds and quick ones.

Which should you choose?

Choose Grammarly if your coursework comes with a rubric, you want a grade estimate before you submit, and you'd like Authorship running in Word, Google Docs or Canvas to record how you wrote the draft. Try the free plan first and see whether the daily limits hold up.

Choose Writefull if you write in Overleaf or want academic phrasing in Word, and your sources already live in a reference manager. The free quota is enough to judge its suggestions; Premium lifts them, subject to fair use.

Writing from evidence you chose yourself is the case we built EthiWrite for. Its citations come only from sources in your Library, and its autocomplete offers a sentence at a time, capped at about thirty words, that you accept or ignore. It formats APA, MLA and Chicago only, so check your required style before you rely on it.
