Jasper vs Writefull: which fits academic writing?
One of these tools checks the language in your LaTeX source. The other writes blog posts in your brand's voice. Writefull is an academic language checker for Word and Overleaf, with models trained on published papers. Jasper is a marketing writer whose public pages don't mention students or academic writing.
For a student or researcher, Writefull is the obvious pick, especially if your work lives in Overleaf. It has a free plan, and its Premium tier costs less than a third of Jasper Pro on either billing basis.

Who each was built for
Jasper describes itself as the place to “Put AI agents to work for marketing”. Its features are about brand consistency: stored voice and audience profiles, and Canvas apps that draft blog posts for a target audience. Listings such as Latka's put it beside Jenni AI only because both are AI writers. Its agents, it says, run end-to-end marketing workflows, and nothing in that pitch touches a manuscript.
Writefull works inside Microsoft Word and Overleaf, checks language directly in LaTeX source, and can generate LaTeX tables and equations. On r/academia, LaTeX users say they value that it understands Overleaf source.
Language feedback trained on papers
Writefull's feedback comes from models trained on published papers and tailored to academic writing. One user's informal grammar test ranked it alongside Grammarly. It isn't always right: researchers in the same r/academia thread describe it correcting mathematics as prose, imposing a serial comma on British English, and twisting meaning. Review each suggestion before you accept it. The free quota also covers its paraphraser, title and abstract generators and LaTeX tools.
Jasper offers no comparable checking among its listed features. Trustpilot reviewers rate it as easy for fast drafts, then describe output that reads generic and takes a lot of editing, which is a different problem: you get text to fix.
Citations are on you with either
Writefull is a language tool and says so: it doesn't find, manage or format sources. Writefull Cite flags sentences that look like they need a citation but have none, and it's sold to institutions only. It's the one feature on either side that touches references, and all it does is flag.
Jasper advertises no academic citation support. The citation it talks about is a brand being cited by AI search engines. With either tool, keep your references in a separate manager.
How much new text they write
Most of what Writefull does is edit your sentences, though its Abstract Generator, Title Generator and Ask AI will write new text on request. The site also now promotes a separate Papers AI product to “Draft the whole manuscript”, so the company does offer a full drafting tool, just not inside the checker.
Jasper drafts whatever content you prompt it for, and it is not designed around essays. If your institution restricts AI-generated text, that's the tool to be careful with.
Price and privacy
Writefull Premium is US$21 a month, or US$150 a year, for unlimited language edits and tools under fair use. For a student paying alone, that US$150 a year is the figure to compare. A Group plan covers two seats for US$285 a year. Jasper Pro is $69 month to month or $59 a seat a month billed yearly, so a year of Jasper on annual billing comes to $708. Writefull has a free plan, a limited quota of each feature; Jasper offers only a 7-day trial.
On data, Writefull says it never stores your text or uses it to train its AI, and asks consent before sending text to third-party AI services. That matters for unpublished research. Billing gripes exist on both sides: some Writefull users report charges after cancelling and a hard-to-find unsubscribe option, and billing and cancellation lead Jasper's Trustpilot complaints.
Which should you choose?
Choose Jasper if you're producing marketing content for a team and want every draft in a stored brand voice. The 7-day trial is the way to test it.
Choose Writefull if you write academic papers in Word or Overleaf and want language feedback trained on published research, with a privacy promise to match. Start on the free quota and move to Premium if you run out.
Writefull polishes sentences and leaves references to you. EthiWrite, which we make, works on the evidence side: every citation is drawn from sources you've added to your Library, and Examiner Mode flags claims that lack support. It formats citations in APA, MLA and Chicago only, which may not match your journal.
FAQ
