Jasper vs Writesonic: two marketing tools, judged as student tools

On both of these sites, the word citation is about marketing. Writesonic builds articles “to rank on Google AND get cited in AI search”. On Jasper's site, citation means getting a brand cited by AI search engines. Both are marketing platforms, and both turn up in lists of Jenni AI alternatives anyway.

For coursework, the honest answer is neither. Between the two, Jasper is the cheaper way in, at $59 a month billed yearly against Writesonic's $79, and it drafts to your prompt through Canvas apps, where Writesonic writes complete articles end to end. Writesonic suits SEO teams who want articles and AI-visibility tracking in one plan.

Citations, in the marketing sense

Writesonic says “Every claim backed by a first-party source before publish”, drawing on a bank that excludes competitor blogs and SEO-spam aggregators. Those sources are web pages chosen for marketing articles, not scholarly papers, and the article writer page lists no academic citation styles. It doesn't cite from your own library or a scholarly database.

Jasper advertises no academic citation support at all. For a student, that puts the two in the same place: any reference list is yours to build and check by hand. If a tutor asks where a claim came from, neither tool hands you a scholarly paper to point to.

Long articles or on-brand drafts

Writesonic's AI Article Writer produces pieces of “3,000 to 8,000 words” after analysing search results and competitor pages, and calls the whole process “The Agentic Content Pipeline”. It writes complete articles end to end, metered by count: 15 a month on Starter, 25 on Basic, 50 on Growth. If you fed it an essay prompt, the result would be its work from start to finish.

Jasper is more of a workbench. Its Canvas has ready-made apps, such as a Blog Post app that drafts for a target audience, and stored Brand Voices, Knowledge assets and Audiences keep everything on-brand (Pro allows two, five and three). It drafts whatever you prompt.

What reviewers say about the writing

A SoftwareReviews user recommends Writesonic for business content but not academic essays, citing weak citation support. NoGood, a growth-marketing agency that recommends a rival AI-visibility tool, calls the output uneven and generic without detailed prompts and the factual accuracy inconsistent. Trustpilot reviewers praise how fast it makes content, while others call it overpriced next to general chatbots. Neither tool describes any feedback on a draft you wrote yourself.

Jasper's reviews run along similar lines: easy for a quick draft, generic without a lot of editing afterwards. AI Worth It, a review site written by an AI agent system, calls it good for marketing teams and says long-form output often needs significant editing and solo writers should skip it.

Team pricing on both sides

Jasper Pro is $59 a seat a month billed yearly with a 12-month commitment, or $69 month to month; Business is custom. Writesonic Starter is $79 a month billed annually for 15 AI articles and one user, Basic $199 and Growth $399, where 20 more articles cost $100 a month, with Enterprise custom. Writesonic's pricing page doesn't show monthly-billed prices, so the annual figures are the only same-basis comparison, and Jasper is lower on it.

Every Writesonic paid plan includes the article writer alongside AI-visibility tracking and site audits, and Growth tracks 200 prompts a month: a buyer watching how a brand appears in AI search, not a student. Neither tool lists a free plan. Jasper offers a 7-day trial of Pro, and Writesonic a 7-day trial with no credit card needed.

Trials, cancellations and refunds

If you try either, set a reminder before the trial ends. Writesonic's Trustpilot reviewers describe charges after cancelling and refused refunds, especially on annual plans. Jasper's loudest Trustpilot complaints are billing and cancellation, including charges after a free trial, and its support is described as slow and email-only.

Which should you choose?

Choose Jasper if your team writes a mix of campaign and blog content and needs it kept in a consistent brand voice. Of the two, it has the lower annual entry price, and its 7-day trial lets you check the fit.

Choose Writesonic if your job is long SEO articles and you also want to track how your brand shows up in AI search. Start with the 7-day trial, which needs no credit card.

Neither advertises citations from scholarly sources, and that's the gap EthiWrite, our own tool, is built to fill. Citations come only from what's in your Library, and its free Plan holds 10 Sources, so a long project means paying.

FAQ
