Jenni AI vs Paperguide: which research writer fits your project?

Both list a $12 plan and a $29 plan, both search 200M+ papers, and both import from Zotero or Mendeley. The numbers match more than the products do. Jenni AI is a writing workspace that suggests your next sentence. Paperguide is a research platform built around reference management and literature reviews, with a writer attached.

If you're writing an essay or a chapter from papers you've collected, Jenni AI fits the job. If you're screening hundreds of studies for a systematic or literature review, Paperguide is built for that.

Writing a paper or running a review

Jenni AI's centre is the editor. Autocomplete suggests sentences as you write, and you can limit it to draw only from your own curated library. Its AI chat reads that library and answers with citations, which is useful for checking whether your sources back a point before you make it.

Paperguide's centre is the evidence. Systematic reviews come with dual independent screening and a PRISMA diagram built from the review's own counts, with the final screening call left to a human. Extract Data pulls chosen details from many papers into a table where every value links to its statement. Its workflows are aimed at researchers and labs rather than coursework essays, and some Trustpilot reviewers found its results unhelpful for university assignments.

Tracing a claim back to the paper

Both tools are strong here, in slightly different ways. Jenni AI connects each AI-suggested sentence to its location in the source PDF. Paperguide links every claim to the exact sentence in the source paper, searching PubMed, arXiv, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar plus your library, and says AI-written passages are never given invented references.

On styles, Jenni formats in 10,000+ and Paperguide's reference manager switches between 1,000+, so Jenni states the higher count. In GPTZero's review, Jenni's citations were accurate in one short sample. Trustpilot reviewers praise both: Jenni for its citation and bibliography tools, Paperguide for its search and extraction.

How much each will write

Both will write for you when asked. Paperguide's AI Writer can “Generate a citation-grounded draft from a research question”, or you can write with its agent alongside. Jenni AI works a sentence at a time, but the sentences add up: GPTZero's review describes a 250-word introduction assembled mostly from accepted suggestions, all of it flagged by a detector as AI-generated (GPTZero sells a detector).

That same review found Jenni's autocomplete read as AI-written and needed heavy rewriting. Read Paperguide's drafts just as critically.

Feedback and checks on your draft

Jenni gives you three Reviews free, ten a month on Plus and unlimited on Pro, though nothing on its pricing page explains what a Review covers. Paperguide's listed features cover screening and extraction, not a review of your prose. Its free plan does include plagiarism checks of up to 4,000 words a month, which is the nearest thing to a pre-submission check on either side.

The $12 and $29 plans, compared properly

Paperguide's Plus is $12 a month per seat and Pro $29, both billed annually, and it advertises yearly billing as 41% cheaper than monthly. Evidence Teams, with dual-reviewer screening, is $89 a seat. Jenni AI's Plus is $12 a month and Pro $29, with an annual discount advertised as “Save 60%” but no annual price shown, and no word on which basis the listed prices use. So the matching numbers may not mean matching bills: check the billing period at checkout.

The free plans are shaped differently. Jenni gives 10 autocompletes a day, 10 PDF uploads, 5 AI chat messages and 3 Reviews, with unlimited citations. Paperguide gives 2,000 AI credits a month shared across its Research Agent, reports and AI Writer, with limited reference manager use and AI searches.

Complaints differ too. Jenni's most common on Trustpilot is billing: renewals without notice and refused refunds. Paperguide's are about reliability, with a doctoral student reporting frequent errors and crashes, slow PDF uploads, and one user unable to remove a saved card without deleting the account.

Which should you choose?

Choose Jenni AI if you're writing from your own papers and want sentence suggestions you can tie to your library, citations linked to the place in the PDF, and the higher stated count of citation styles. Its free plan is enough to try it on a real draft.

Choose Paperguide if you're doing a literature or systematic review and want screening, data extraction and claim-level links in one workspace. Its free credits let you test a small review before paying for a year.

If you'd rather neither tool drafted for you, EthiWrite is our take: autocomplete capped at about thirty words, citations only from your Library, and Examiner Mode to critique the argument without rewriting it. It searches one index, OpenAlex, where Paperguide searches four, so it's no substitute for a systematic review.
