Jenni AI vs Smodin: which AI writing tool can you trust with an essay?
Both of these will put AI-written text in your document. What separates them is what you can check afterwards. Jenni AI connects its suggested sentences to their place in the source PDF. Smodin's writer says it can find sources and cite them, but doesn't say where those sources come from.
Pick Jenni AI. Smodin drafts full essays and sells a humanizer to slip them past AI detectors, which is a risk no student needs, and Jenni has a published free plan to start on. Smodin's one real advantage is a cheap bundle of extra tools.

What you can check afterwards
Jenni AI brings papers in from PDF uploads, Zotero or Mendeley, or its own search of 200M+ papers, and formats citations in 10,000+ styles. You can limit autocomplete to your own library so suggestions draw only on papers you picked. In GPTZero's review its citations were accurate in a short sample.
Smodin says its writer can find sources and add references in APA or MLA in one click, and it claims to make facts, data and statistics “100% accurate” without saying how. On r/WritingWithAI and Trustpilot, users say generated references and facts need checking by hand, and a Reddit user says its references “need a second look”.
How much they write for you
Smodin's plans promise you can “write full essays with simple prompts”, and its AI Writer drafts essays, articles and research papers from a topic with your choice of style, tone and length. Then it offers to hide the result: plans promise to “detect and bypass top AI detectors”, and its humanizer page calls the output “undetectable”. Handing that in as your own work is an academic-integrity risk.
Jenni AI writes a sentence at a time, and that can still add up to a whole passage. GPTZero, which sells a detector, reported a 250-word introduction built mostly from accepted suggestions that a detector then flagged as entirely AI-generated. The point stands: what you accept is AI text.
Feedback and the extra tools
Smodin's subscription bundles an AI writer, chat, an AI content detector, a humanizer, a plagiarism checker, a rewriter, a summarizer and a translator. Its positive Trustpilot reviews mostly credit quick summaries and tidier wording, not the essay writer.
Jenni AI rations Reviews by plan, from three on the free tier to unlimited on Pro, though its pricing tiers only count them and don't say what a Review checks. Its AI chat reads your library and answers with citations, so you can ask whether a source actually supports your point.
Ratings you can and can't rely on
Smodin's site shows a 4.8/5 rating citing Trustpilot. Trustpilot says Smodin's rating “is unavailable due to a breach of our guidelines” and that it has “removed a number of fake reviews for this company.” Jenni's Trustpilot reviewers praise its citation and bibliography tools and individual support staff, though billing is their most common complaint.
What you pay
Smodin Starter is $12.99 a month billed monthly or $10 billed annually, with limited writing output. Premium, with unlimited writing and advanced humanization, is $19.99 or $16. You can try its tools without signing up, but the pricing page lists only those two paid plans and publishes no free limits.
On Jenni's free plan you get 10 autocompletes a day plus 10 PDF uploads, 5 chat messages and 3 Reviews; citations are unlimited. Plus is $12 a month and Pro $29; Jenni offers an annual discount without showing the annual price or saying which basis the listed prices use, so check before comparing it with Smodin's monthly $12.99.
Billing is the most common complaint about both. Smodin users describe being charged for a full year when they expected monthly billing and losing access as soon as they cancelled. Jenni's reviewers describe renewals charged without notice and refused refunds.
Which should you choose?
Choose Jenni AI if you're writing from papers and want sentences you can trace to the PDF, autocomplete you can hold to your library, and a free plan to start. Accept suggestions sparingly if your course limits AI text.
Choose Smodin only for low-stakes work you won't submit as your own, where its cheap bundle of summarizer, rewriter, translator and checkers is useful. Verify every fact and reference it produces, and choose monthly billing on purpose.
Want AI help that never hands you a passage to disguise? EthiWrite (our own tool) caps Autocomplete at about thirty words, cites only from your Library, and its Examiner Mode flags weak spots in a draft without rewriting anything. Every Quota is finite on every Plan, though, and the free Plan caps how many Sources your Library holds, so heavy use means upgrading.
