Jenni AI vs Paperpal: help writing the draft, or help fixing it?
Put these two on a timeline and they barely overlap. Jenni AI is strongest while you're drafting: it suggests sentences, ties them to the place in your source PDF, and answers questions about your library. Paperpal is strongest once there's a draft: academic grammar and tone suggestions, 30+ pre-submission checks and a plagiarism check, inside Word, Google Docs or Overleaf.
Pick by stage. Use Jenni AI if the blank page is the problem, Paperpal if the deadline is. Both have free plans, and both are small.

Writing assistants help you write; essay generators write the essay for you.
| Product | Type | Paid from | Free tier | Citations | Ghostwriting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Paperpal | Writing assistant | See pricing page | Yes | Your sources, or papers it finds for you | Drafts text when asked |

Starting a draft
Jenni AI's autocomplete suggests your next sentence, and you can limit it to draw only on your own curated library. Bring papers in from PDF uploads, Zotero or Mendeley, or its search of 200M+ papers. The AI chat reads that library and answers with citations, so you can test an idea against your sources before you commit it to the page.
The risk is how much it writes. GPTZero's reviewer built a 250-word introduction largely by accepting suggestions, and a detector then flagged every word as AI-generated. GPTZero sells a detector, so weigh the source, but the lesson holds: if you accept everything, the draft isn't really yours.
Finishing a draft
Paperpal goes where your document already is: an MS Word add-in, plus Chrome and Edge extensions for Google Docs and Overleaf. Its grammar and tone suggestions are trained on scholarly edits, and its 30+ pre-submission checks test the text against journals' language and formatting standards. The plagiarism check compares your text against 99B+ sources before your institution's own review.
Paperpal can draft too: its homepage offers to “Draft with suggestions grounded in your sources”, and the paraphraser restructures sentences. On r/research, commenters were sceptical of AI editing for research writing and warned it can blur what you meant. Take suggestions one at a time.
Citations on both sides
Here they're closer than anywhere else. Both cite from your uploaded references or PDFs or from their own paper search, and both format in 10,000+ styles. Paperpal's Research and Cite states a higher count, 250M+ articles against Jenni's 200M+, and extracts insights from PDFs. Jenni adds tracing: each AI-suggested sentence links to its spot in the source PDF.
Trustpilot reviewers praise Jenni's citation tools, and GPTZero's review (GPTZero sells an AI detector) found its citations accurate in a short sample. Even so, r/PhD commenters asked about tools like Jenni advised keeping AI away from references and using a citation manager such as Zotero.
Feedback before you submit
Paperpal has the clearer offer: the pre-submission checks, plus an AI review you get five times a day on the free plan. Jenni counts Reviews in every plan, up to unlimited on Pro, but its pricing doesn't say what one checks. Paperpal's Trustpilot reviewers, most of whom it invited, praise its AI-detection checks.
Prices you can see, and prices you can't
Jenni AI shows its prices: Plus at $12 a month, with 5,000 autocompletes and 500 AI chat messages a month, and unlimited Pro at $29. It advertises an annual discount (“Save 60%”) without showing the annual price. Billing is the most common complaint on Trustpilot, with renewals charged without notice and refunds refused.
Paperpal doesn't show paid prices until the pricing page loads them for your region, which makes it hard to compare in advance. Prime and Pro are billed monthly or annually; Prime gives 20k grammar edits a month and Pro makes them unlimited. Its free plan has 200 grammar edits a month and five a day each of the AI writing tools and research Q&A. Jenni's free plan gives 10 autocompletes a day and 5 chat messages.
Which should you choose?
Choose Jenni AI if you're building a paper from sources and want suggestions tied to your library, sentences linked to the PDF and a cited chat to question your reading. Start on the free plan, and limit autocomplete to your library if you want it on a short lead.
Choose Paperpal if the draft is written and you want academic polish, journal-style checks and a plagiarism scan without leaving Word, Google Docs or Overleaf. The free plan shows you how it edits; check your regional price before upgrading.
EthiWrite, which we make, sits between the two: its autocomplete offers one short sentence at a time, it cites only from your Library, and Examiner Mode flags weak evidence before you submit without rewriting anything. It formats APA, MLA and Chicago only, where both Jenni and Paperpal offer 10,000+ styles.
