EssayGenius alternatives: other places to research, cite and write an essay
EssayGenius relaunched as an essay editor that keeps the outline, sources, notes, citations and version history beside the draft, with sources from databases such as OpenAlex and Crossref. It's a decent workspace. The reasons to leave are narrower: a thin AI allowance on the free plan, a Pro price that depends on which page you read, and a draft button that sits awkwardly with the vendor's “We do not write your paper”.
Jenni AI is the closest editor, with a 200M+ paper search and 10,000+ citation styles. Grammarly's Authorship keeps a record of your process much as the Process Report does, Ponder suits a source-heavy topic, and Thesify critiques a draft. EthiWrite, which we make, is the option with no draft button at all.
Prices and features checked on October 17, 2026.
Why people look past EssayGenius
Start with the draft. The vendor says it has “no one-click ‘write the whole essay’ button”, yet the free plan includes “One full essay draft, on us” and Pro has unlimited ones. A roundup on Best Writing, a site for writers, calls it best for full draft generation, rates it “Use with caution” for institutional acceptance, and notes how recently it relaunched. Back at the 2021 launch, a Reddit commenter liked the design but warned the generated text could get students into trouble. That was the old product, but the worry carries over.
Then the AI is rationed. Free accounts get 25 AI messages and 100 inline suggestions a month, and academic source discovery and citation integrity checks are Pro-only. Pro's price depends on the page: the pricing toggle shows “$10/mo”, the Semester Pass average, while the FAQ and the listed monthly offer say $15.
It gets plenty right. The vendor says its sources are “retrieved, not generated”, and they come with DOIs and links to the papers. Every draft is auto-saved with timestamps, a Process Report shows how the essay developed, and you can start writing without an account, with essays stored in your browser until you sign in.
What to look for in a EssayGenius alternative
An AI allowance that matches your week
A free editor with a small AI allowance can still be the right deal. Count what you'd actually use in a week (suggestions, chat messages, searches) and compare that, not the headline features.
A record of how you wrote
If your school is wary of AI, a timestamped history or an authorship replay is worth more than any detector score. EssayGenius's Process Report does this, and so does Grammarly's Authorship.
Paper search on the plan you'll use
EssayGenius keeps academic source discovery behind Pro. If finding papers is the part you need, check that a replacement's free plan includes search before you move your work.
The best EssayGenius alternatives
1. EthiWrite
Full disclosure: this is our tool.
EthiWrite goes further than EssayGenius in one direction: there's no draft to generate. It won't write paragraphs from a prompt, and Autocomplete offers one sentence at a time, about thirty words at most, as ghost text. Citations come only from your Library, so when nothing there supports a claim you get an empty result rather than a stand-in reference.
Examiner Mode reads the finished essay and flags unsupported claims, thin evidence and structural gaps without changing a word. Uploading sources, searching papers, citing and export aren't metered on any plan, and there's a free plan. The trade-off: paper search covers one index, OpenAlex, where EssayGenius also draws on Crossref.

EthiWrite editor with the Guide panel open (demo account, email blurred). Best for: Students who liked EssayGenius's workspace but want no draft button in it.
2. Jenni AI
Jenni AI is the nearest replacement for the EssayGenius editor. Bring in PDFs, a Zotero or Mendeley library, or papers from its 200M+ search. Citations format in 10,000+ styles, AI-suggested sentences link back to their place in the source PDF, and the AI chat answers questions about your library with citations.
Its free plan is small too: 10 autocompletes a day, 5 chat messages and 3 Reviews, with unlimited citations. Paying gets you Plus at $12 a month, or Pro with unlimited autocomplete at $29. Autocomplete can produce whole passages if you keep accepting, and Trustpilot's most common complaint is renewals charged without notice.

Jenni AI editor, signed in to a free account. Best for: Students who want an editor like EssayGenius's with 10,000+ citation styles.
3. Grammarly
Grammarly's Authorship is a process record you can take to other editors. It records whether text was typed, pasted or AI-assisted, with a replay and a report you decide whether to share, and you can switch it on in Word, Google Docs and Canvas submissions. It's on the free plan.
The docs editor adds AI Grader, which estimates a grade from your rubric, and Citation Finder, which flags claims that need support and suggests web sources in APA, MLA or Chicago. Free use comes with daily caps on most of that; Pro is $144 a year or $30 month to month. Its agents will draft text when asked.

Grammarly doc with Grammarly's built-in demo essay, signed in to a free account. Best for: Students who want proof of their writing process inside tools they already use.
4. Ponder
Ponder covers the source-hunting EssayGenius keeps behind Pro. It searches 320M+ scholarly works alongside your own PDFs, slides and web links, and arranges them as mind maps and paper lists. Click a citation and the exact paragraph opens; citations resting only on an abstract get flagged, and retracted sources are re-checked before export.
Every AI edit is saved as a version you can roll back. The free plan gives 50 credits a day; Casual is $14 a month billed yearly ($168) or $16 month to month. Its Draft stage will write papers from your sources, and a detailed review sponsored by Ponder warned that credits run out faster than expected.

Ponder public homepage, signed out (the workspace needs an account). Best for: Students on a source-heavy topic who want to map the reading before writing.
5. Thesify
Thesify doesn't replace the editor; it reads what you wrote in it. Its Reviewer returns structured feedback on argument, clarity and methodology, against rubrics for thesis strength, evidence and fit with the assignment, on documents of up to 100,000 words.
Reviews cost €14.95 each, or €24.95 a month for three, and there's no free plan. The homepage says uploads are never shared, sold or used to train AI, and its newer Coauthor workspace, which has drafting agents, marks which text was written by AI and which by a person.

Thesify reviewer, signed in to a free account, before any document is uploaded. Best for: Rubric feedback on a long essay before it's due.
6. Yomu AI
Yomu AI keeps a reusable source library, finds and formats citations in 700+ styles through a Sourcely-powered tool, chats with PDFs and web search, and runs Get Feedback reviews you can preview and apply. It also writes by design: describe the paper and it produces a full, researched draft.
If the draft button is why you're leaving EssayGenius, this isn't your tool. No free plan is listed for the editor, though its FAQ says you can start free to try it. Pro is $10 a month billed annually or $21 month to month, capped at 1,000 AI actions; Ultra drops the cap for $17 a month billed annually.

Yomu AI new-document screen, signed in to an unpaid account (its pricing FAQ says you can start for free to try it; the account name is blurred). Best for: Students who want EssayGenius-style drafting with a choice of AI models.
7. Paperguide
Paperguide is the research-grade version of a sourced workspace. Its reference manager imports from Zotero or Mendeley and switches between 1,000+ styles, its search covers 200M+ papers across PubMed, arXiv, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, and every claim links to the exact sentence it came from.
The free plan's 2,000 AI credits a month are shared across the Research Agent, reports and AI Writer. Plus is $12 a month per seat, and listed prices are per seat and billed annually. The AI Writer drafts from a research question, and its workflows lean toward literature reviews for researchers over coursework.

Paperguide dashboard, signed in to a free account (the account name is removed). Best for: Literature reviews and research essays with a lot of papers to manage.
