Copy.ai vs Yomu AI: which AI writer is built for essays?

Yomu AI. It finds, inserts and formats citations in 700+ styles, keeps a library of your sources, and runs focused academic reviews of your draft. Copy.ai is a marketing platform whose public pages don't describe finding or citing a source.

Don't mistake that for the cautious choice. Yomu writes for you by design, and its new-document flow “writes a full, researched draft”. Copy.ai will write whatever you ask, too. Either can produce the essay; Yomu's version arrives researched.

Either one will write the essay

Yomu AI says so plainly. Describe the paper and the new-document flow “writes a full, researched draft”, and the Document Assistant helps “write entire sections”. Its ethics statement asks that it be used alongside a student's own writing, “not as a replacement for” it.

Copy.ai writes whatever you ask in chat or its generators and takes no position on student work, and the Chat plan puts no cap on words in chat. Its Paragraph Generator page pitches drafting essays and sections of research papers. If your course bans AI-generated text, both tools need a firm hand.

Sources are where they split

Yomu cites from sources saved to your library, or from sources its Sourcely-powered search finds for you. The library carries across documents, and you can chat with PDFs, images and web search.

DIY AI's review, based on public information (the site may earn an affiliate commission), likes having drafting, citations, PDF chat and a library in one workspace, but warns that the citations still need checking against the sources. Copy.ai's pages don't describe finding, citing or formatting academic sources at all, so every reference in a Copy.ai draft is yours to track down.

Feedback on the draft

Yomu added Get Feedback in September 2026: focused academic reviews of your draft that you preview and then apply. Because a suggestion goes straight into the text once applied, it's worth reading each one against what you meant to say.

Copy.ai describes nothing like it. Its closest offer is the free grammar checker on its tools list.

Picking the AI model

Here the two overlap. Copy.ai's Chat plan gives five seats unlimited words in chat with “Access to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini models”. Yomu's paid plans let you pick among models from several AI providers for chat and editing, and Ultra adds frontier models.

The setting is what differs. Copy.ai's chat is a general-purpose workspace, and several long-time users say its quality and value have slipped next to chatbots such as ChatGPT. Yomu's model choice lives inside an editor organised around your source library and your draft.

Prices and free access

Yomu AI Pro is $10 a month billed annually ($120 a year) or $21 month to month, capped at 1,000 AI actions a month. Ultra, with unlimited actions, is $17 a month billed annually ($204 a year) or $35 monthly. The pricing page lists no free plan for the editor, though its FAQ says “you can start using Yomu for free to try the service”, and there are free single-purpose tools such as an essay outline generator and citation generators.

Copy.ai's Chat plan is $24 a month billed annually or $29 monthly. On annual billing, both Yomu plans cost less than Chat. Month to month, Yomu Pro costs less and Ultra costs more. Copy.ai's pricing page lists no free plan either, but a sign-up prompt on its free tools advertises 2,000 free words a month, with limits that are unverified.

There's little independent word on Yomu: its only Trustpilot review complains that the subscription renewed without notice. Copy.ai's Trustpilot reviewers describe charges after cancelling and trouble getting refunds.

Which should you choose?

Choose Copy.ai if you write for a business and want a team chat workspace with OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models across five seats. Nothing on its site describes citing sources, so don't lean on it for a reference list.

Choose Yomu AI if you want citations found and formatted in 700+ styles, a source library and feedback you can apply in the editor, and you're comfortable with an AI that will write whole sections. Expect to pay once you've tried it.

Sometimes the point of the assignment is learning to write it. That's the case EthiWrite, our own tool, is made for. It won't write paragraphs from a prompt, its Autocomplete offers a sentence at a time, and citations come only from your Library. That makes it slower than Yomu if you want a draft handed to you.

FAQ

Does Yomu AI have a free plan?
Its pricing page lists only paid plans, but its FAQ says you can start for free to try the service, and single-purpose tools such as its paraphrasing tool and citation generators are free.
Can Copy.ai cite sources the way Yomu AI does?
Not that it describes. Copy.ai's public pages don't mention finding, citing or formatting academic sources, while Yomu finds, inserts and formats citations through a tool powered by Sourcely.
Can I use Yomu AI for university essays?
That's up to your institution. Yomu's ethics statement asks that it be used alongside your writing, “not as a replacement for” it, yet it will write a full draft if you ask. Read your course's AI policy first.
Is Yomu AI's Pro plan enough?
Pro is capped at 1,000 AI actions a month, and only Ultra is unlimited. If you lean on drafting and feedback, watch your usage before the cap makes the decision for you.
Is anything in Copy.ai useful for students?
A few of its free single-purpose tools, such as the outline generator, summarizer and paraphrasing tool, can help with small jobs. The Paragraph Generator, which pitches “writing long-form essays”, is the one to leave alone for coursework.
