Grammarly vs Jasper: which is worth it for a student?

Grammarly's AI Grader asks for your assignment details and rubric. Jasper asks for your Brand Voice. That tells you who each one is for, and for a student the answer is Grammarly.

Jasper is a marketing tool through and through, with no free plan and Pro from $59 a seat per month billed yearly. Grammarly's docs, Authorship and most agents are free, within daily limits.

Rubric versus brand voice

Grammarly's agents work on writing you've done. AI Grader estimates your grade and gives personalized feedback, and it has no instructor-facing component. Reader Reactions shows what readers are likely to take away and where they could get confused. Authorship records whether text was typed, pasted or AI-assisted, so you can show how a draft came together if you choose to share the report.

Jasper keeps marketing output consistent with stored Brand Voices, Knowledge assets and Audiences (two, five and three on Pro), and its Canvas workspace has ready-made apps such as a Blog Post app. Its homepage, pricing and Canvas pages say nothing about students, essays or academic writing.

Two meanings of citation

On Jasper's site, “citation” means getting a brand cited by AI search engines, not citing sources in your writing. It advertises no academic citation features, and whether its chat answers link their sources when they use web search is unverified.

Grammarly's Citation Finder flags claims that need support, suggests web-based sources it finds, and formats and inserts the citation, in APA, MLA or Chicago only. It doesn't name the databases it searches, so open each suggested source before you keep it. Free accounts get five citations a day.

How much each one writes

Jasper drafts whatever content you prompt it for and isn't designed around essays. A guide for parents warns that students may use AI writers like it “to cheat on school essays and papers.” Some reviewers like it for quick drafts but say the output can feel generic and need heavy editing.

Grammarly isn't writing-free either. AI Grader's suggestions include AI-generated rewrites, which Grammarly itself warns could get your work flagged for AI use, and its agents can put new text straight into the editor. Students on Reddit describe high AI-detector scores on work they wrote and only edited with Grammarly. Its Humanizer, sold beside an AI Detector, makes AI-assisted writing “sound more natural”, and Grammarly says it “is not intended to bypass AI detectors.”

Feedback before you submit

Only Grammarly describes any. AI Grader's predicted grade is only an estimate, and Grammarly says not to read it as your real grade, so treat it as a second reader rather than a marker. The free plan gives three pieces of AI Grader feedback once a day and five Reader Reactions a day. Jasper's pages, aimed at marketers, describe nothing that reviews an essay.

The feedback has critics. Long-time Grammarly users say the newer AI prompts and upgrade pop-ups get in the way of writing, and that its suggestions flatten a writer's voice. Take what helps and leave the rest.

What each one costs

Jasper Pro is $59 a seat per month billed yearly with a 12-month commitment, or $69 a month if you'd rather cancel anytime. There's no free plan, only a 7-day free trial of Pro, and Business pricing goes through sales. Even AI Worth It, a review site written by an AI agent system, calls it good for marketing teams but says solo writers should skip it.

Grammarly's free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month but leaves out full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism detection and AI-text detection. Pro adds the two detectors and 2,000 prompts a month, with a free trial. The $12 a month on its plans page matches Pro's $144 annual price spread over twelve months, and month to month it's $30. That puts Grammarly Pro below Jasper Pro on both bases: $12 against $59 a month on annual billing, $30 against $69 monthly.

Billing complaints follow both. Jasper's loudest on Trustpilot are about billing and cancellation, with slow, email-only support. Grammarly's reviewers split: some describe renewals without warning and refused refunds, others got refunds quickly.

Which should you choose?

Choose Grammarly if you're writing for a grade: rubric-based feedback from AI Grader, Reader Reactions, citation suggestions and an Authorship record, all available free within daily limits.

Choose Jasper if you're producing marketing content for a brand, need it to stay in one voice across a team, and the business is paying. Start with the 7-day trial.

If neither fits because you want feedback without any rewrites, EthiWrite is the tool we built. Examiner Mode flags unsupported claims and structural gaps and has no ability to rewrite your text, and citations come only from your Library. Like Grammarly's Citation Finder, it formats APA, MLA and Chicago only.

FAQ

Does Grammarly's AI Grader show my grade to my teacher?
No. AI Grader has no instructor-facing component, and Grammarly says its estimate “should not be taken as your actual grade”.
Is Jasper free for students?
Jasper has no free plan, only a 7-day free trial of Pro. After that, Pro is $69 a month on monthly billing, or $59 a seat per month billed yearly.
Can Jasper write an essay?
It will draft whatever you prompt, but it isn't designed around essays and advertises no academic citation support. Submitting its output as your own work is an academic-integrity risk.
What does Grammarly Authorship do?
It records your writing process, showing what you typed, pasted or wrote with AI help, with a replay and a report you decide whether to share. It's on the free plan and can be turned on in Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Canvas LMS submissions.
