Jasper vs Paperpal: which helps a student with a draft?

Say the draft already exists and the deadline is close. Paperpal is built for that moment: academic grammar and tone suggestions, 30+ pre-submission checks and a plagiarism check, all inside the editor you already use. Jasper isn't. It writes marketing content for teams, and its homepage, pricing and Canvas pages don't mention students, essays or academic writing.

So for a student, this one isn't close: pick Paperpal and start on its free plan. Jasper is worth a look only if you also produce brand content for a team.

Where you do the work

Paperpal goes to your document. There's an MS Word add-in, and Chrome and Edge extensions that support Google Docs and Overleaf, so you don't copy text into a separate app. Jasper centres on its own Canvas workspace, which offers ready-made apps such as a Blog Post app. It also keeps stored Brand Voices, Knowledge assets and Audiences (two, five and three on Pro), which matter to a brand and not to a seminar paper.

Checks before you submit

Paperpal's grammar and tone suggestions are trained on scholarly edits, and its 30+ pre-submission checks test your text against the language and formatting standards of journals. The plagiarism check compares your text against 99B+ sources before your institution runs its own. Trustpilot reviewers, most of whom Paperpal invited to review, praise its AI-detection checks and its help with editing.

Not everyone is sold on AI editing for research. On r/research, commenters warned that it can blur what you meant, which is a fair reason to accept suggestions one at a time. Jasper offers nothing in this category among its listed features; its job is producing on-brand content from stored Brand Voices and Audiences.

Finding and citing sources

Paperpal's Research and Cite searches 250M+ research articles, extracts insights from PDFs, and generates citations in 10,000+ styles. It can also cite from the references and PDFs you upload. That puts citing inside the same tool that checks your grammar. If you collect PDFs as you read, the extraction step is where Paperpal earns its place.

Jasper advertises no academic citation support. The word appears on its site, but there it's about brands showing up in AI search answers. If you draft in Jasper, every reference is yours to find and format.

How far each writes for you

Paperpal isn't editing-only. Its homepage offers to “Draft with suggestions grounded in your sources”, and its paraphraser restructures your sentences. Mostly, though, it's an editor of text you wrote.

Jasper drafts whatever you prompt it for, and it is not designed around essays. Trustpilot reviewers like it for quick drafts, with the caveat that what comes out can read as generic and want heavy editing. If your school treats AI text as misconduct, that's the line to keep in mind.

Price: one shows it, one doesn't

Paperpal's paid prices only appear once the pricing page loads them for your region, which makes them hard to compare in advance. Prime and Pro are billed monthly or annually. Prime gives 20k grammar edits and 10k words of plagiarism and reference checks a month; Pro makes grammar edits and AI detection unlimited.

The free plan is small: 200 grammar edits a month and five a day each of the AI writing tools and research Q&A, plus five files a month of chat with papers and lite plagiarism and journal-fit reports. Jasper has no free plan, just a 7-day trial of Pro, which then costs $59 a seat a month billed yearly or $69 month to month.

Which should you choose?

Choose Jasper if you write marketing content for a team, want it kept in a stored brand voice, and have a business budget. Run the 7-day trial on a real campaign first.

Choose Paperpal if you have an academic draft and want it polished, checked for plagiarism and cited without leaving Word, Google Docs or Overleaf. Begin with the free plan and look up your regional price before upgrading.

Paperpal mostly works on a draft you've already written; EthiWrite, which we make, helps while you're writing it. It suggests a sentence at a time, cites only from sources in your Library, and flags thin evidence without rewriting your text. Its citations come in APA, MLA and Chicago only, a much shorter list than Paperpal's 10,000+.
