Jasper vs Smodin: what a student should know before using either
Smodin will write your essay, then sell you a way to hide that it did. Its plans promise to “detect and bypass top AI detectors”, and the same subscription drafts essays and research papers from a topic. Jasper writes marketing content for teams and never mentions students or essays on its homepage, pricing or Canvas pages.
Neither is a safe pick for graded work. If you're choosing anyway, Smodin is the one aimed at essays, and it's cheaper on either billing basis; Jasper is the one built for a marketing department. What matters more is how Smodin's evasion pitch sits with your school's integrity policy.

The essay writer and the humanizer
Give Smodin's AI Writer a topic and it drafts an essay, article or research paper in the style, tone and length you pick, then expands the next section on request. Its plans describe it plainly: “write full essays with simple prompts”. Its writer FAQ adds “Always follow your institution's academic integrity policies when using AI writing tools.”
Then comes the humanizer. Smodin promises “Highest humanization possible to bypass Turnitin-level detection” and its humanizer page calls the result “undetectable”. Handing in that text as your own is an academic-integrity risk, whatever the FAQ says. Jasper drafts whatever you prompt too, but it sells no detector evasion among its listed features.
Where the sources come from
Smodin says its writer can find sources and add references in APA or MLA in one click. It doesn't say where those sources come from. A Reddit user reports its references “need a second look”, and other users say generated facts and references need checking by hand.
Jasper doesn't try. It advertises no academic citation support; its citation talk is about brands being named by AI search engines. So one tool offers references you have to verify and the other offers none.
Claims to take with salt
Smodin says its writer makes facts, data and statistics “100% accurate” without saying how. Its site also shows a 4.8/5 rating citing Trustpilot, while Trustpilot says Smodin's rating “is unavailable due to a breach of our guidelines” and that it has “removed a number of fake reviews for this company.” When the marketing and the review site disagree that sharply, believe the review site.
Jasper's reviews are mixed. Trustpilot reviewers find it easy for quick drafts but say output can be generic, and AI Worth It, a review site written by an AI agent system, calls it good for marketing teams while advising solo writers to skip it.
Checking tools and feedback
Smodin's subscription bundles an AI content detector, a plagiarism checker, a rewriter, a summarizer and a translator alongside the writer and chat. Positive Trustpilot reviews mostly praise the quick summaries and help tidying up wording, rather than the essay writer. One paying reviewer reports inconsistent results for the same document.
Jasper has none of those among its listed features. What it offers instead is consistency, with stored brand voices and audience profiles behind every draft. Useful to a company, beside the point for a student wanting feedback on a draft.
Price, trials and billing traps
Smodin Starter is $12.99 a month billed monthly or $10 a month billed annually; Premium, with unlimited writing and advanced humanization, is $19.99 or $16. Jasper Pro is $69 month to month or $59 a seat billed yearly. On either basis Smodin's top plan is under a third of Jasper's.
Smodin says you can try its tools with no sign-up, but its pricing page lists only the two paid plans and publishes no free limits. Jasper has no free plan, only a 7-day trial of Pro. Billing is the top complaint for both: Smodin users describe being charged for a full year when they expected monthly billing, and Jasper reviewers report charges after cancelling or after the trial.
Which should you choose?
Choose Jasper if you write marketing content for a team that needs a consistent brand voice, and the business price is covered. Try the 7-day trial and cancel before it bills if it doesn't fit.
Choose Smodin only for drafts you won't submit as your own, such as practice or summaries, where its cheap bundle of writer, summarizer and checkers earns its keep. Check every fact and source it gives you, and pick monthly billing deliberately at checkout.
If the point is to write the essay yourself and be able to defend it, EthiWrite, which we built, works the other way from Smodin: it won't write paragraphs from a prompt, and its citations come only from sources in your Library. That makes it the slower choice if you want a draft handed to you.
FAQ
- Is it safe to use Smodin for university essays?
- Not if you submit what it writes. Smodin drafts full essays and markets a humanizer to bypass top AI detectors, and submitting that text as your own is an academic-integrity risk. Even Smodin's FAQ tells you to follow your institution's policies.
- Is Smodin cheaper than Jasper?
- Yes. Smodin's plans run from $10 to $19.99 a month depending on plan and billing, while Jasper Pro is $59 billed yearly or $69 monthly.
- Can Smodin or Jasper add citations?
- Smodin says it can find sources and add references in APA or MLA, but it doesn't say where they come from, and users report they need checking. Jasper advertises no academic citation support.
- Why is Smodin's Trustpilot rating unavailable?
- Trustpilot says Smodin's rating is unavailable due to a breach of its guidelines and that it removed a number of fake reviews for the company. Smodin's own site still shows a 4.8/5 rating citing Trustpilot.
- Does Smodin have a free plan?
- Sort of. You can try its tools without signing up, but the pricing page lists only Starter and Premium and doesn't publish free limits.
