PerfectEssayWriter.ai alternatives: graders, citation checks and editors for your own work
PerfectEssayWriter.ai's footer says its output is “not to be used for submission”. Its FAQ, asked “Can you write my essay or do my essay for me free?”, answers “Yes”. Both describe the same product: a generator that turns a topic into a full cited essay, with a humanizer, AI detector, grader and plagiarism checker bundled in.
If the grader was what you liked, Grammarly's AI Grader and Thesify's Reviewer do that job on your own draft. If it was the references, Trinka checks a reference list for retracted and hallucinated sources, and Jenni AI, Paperpal and Paperguide find papers you can open and read. EthiWrite (ours) is here for students who want to write it themselves.

Where PerfectEssayWriter.ai lets students down
The tool is tuned for detectors. Its model, the site says, “avoids the structural patterns AI detectors flag”, and an Essay Humanizer is there “to reduce AI detection signals”. Text built to slip past a detector is still text you didn't write, and authorship is the question your school will ask.
The site promises that every citation is a real, verifiable source and says it “pulls citations from real academic sources”, without saying what it searches. A week-long hands-on review on AutoGPT.net, tagged Sponsored, found the citations mostly accurate but some of them broken links or “flat-out made-up references”. The same review called the essays well structured but shallow on specialised topics.
Pricing is hard to pin down. The price cards, the pricing FAQ and the homepage FAQ quote different annual prices, and the homepage uses different plan names. Billed monthly, Standard is $8.88, Pro $15.99 and Premium $21.99, each shown as a discount, and plans auto-renew. Trustpilot reviewers report refunds refused or ignored, paid essays never delivered and essays shorter than requested.
It does some things well. You can steer the output with an uploaded rubric or extra instructions, set the academic level from High School to PhD, and add an optional outline. Citations come out in APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago, Harvard or IEEE. Positive reviewers on ProvenExpert, where the profile owner picks which reviews appear, praise its speed and value for money.
What to look for in a PerfectEssayWriter.ai alternative
A grader that reads your writing
A grade estimate is only useful when it's about your draft. Look for rubric-based feedback that tells you what to fix in your own argument, not a score on an essay the tool wrote.
References checked against a register
A reference that looks right isn't the same as one that exists. A check against a register such as Crossref, which Trinka's Citation Checker runs, catches the invented ones before your marker does.
One price, stated once
When a site quotes three different annual prices, you won't know which one you'll pay until the charge arrives. Choose tools whose plan page states the price and the billing period together.
The best PerfectEssayWriter.ai alternatives
1. EthiWrite
Full disclosure: this is our tool.
EthiWrite treats the essay as yours to write. Guided mode writes nothing. Autocomplete, when you want it, offers one short continuation of about thirty words at most, and you accept it or keep typing. Your Library holds uploaded PDFs, papers from OpenAlex, web pages and books, and citations can come only from those.
Examiner Mode is its pre-submission check, minus the grade: it maps your argument and flags unsupported claims, thin evidence and structural gaps, and can't rewrite anything. There's a free plan. The honest limit: it won't write paragraphs from a prompt or rewrite your essay to sound better, so if you want a draft produced for you, it's the slower choice.

EthiWrite editor with the Guide panel open (demo account, email blurred). Best for: Students who want feedback on an essay they wrote, from sources they chose.
2. Grammarly
Grammarly's AI Grader does a grader's job on a draft you wrote: give it the assignment details and rubric, and it estimates a grade with personalized feedback. It has no instructor-facing component, and Grammarly says the estimate “should not be taken as your actual grade”. Reader Reactions adds what a reader will likely take away and where they could get confused.
On the free plan, AI Grader gives three pieces of feedback once a day. Pro is $144 a year or $30 month to month and adds plagiarism and AI-text detection. Citation Finder sticks to web sources in APA, MLA or Chicago. Grammarly also warns that its AI rewrite suggestions could get your work flagged, so use them sparingly.

Grammarly doc with Grammarly's built-in demo essay, signed in to a free account. Best for: A grade estimate and reader feedback on your own draft before you submit.
3. Trinka
Made-up references are what Trinka's Citation Checker is for. It validates the references you already have against Crossref and flags retracted, hallucinated and predatory sources, and a Citation Formatter works on the same list. Around that sits an academic grammar and style checker, with APA, AMA, ACS, AGU and IEEE style-guide corrections on paid plans.
Citation tools, plagiarism checks and the AI detector run on credits, and the free Basic plan gets 4 a month with 5,000 words of writing help. Premium is $48 a year billed yearly; Premium Plus is $125 a year with double credits. An Originality.ai test (Originality.ai sells a grammar checker) found it missed several basic misspellings.

Trinka editor on its built-in demo file, signed in to a free account. Best for: Checking that every reference on a list is real before you hand it in.
4. Thesify
Thesify's Reviewer is built for long work. It gives structured feedback on argument, clarity and methodology, with rubrics for thesis strength, evidence, clarity and fit with the assignment, and takes up to 100 pages in one report. Commenters under Andy Stapleton's walkthrough video (he's quoted as an endorser on Thesify's homepage) found it useful on early drafts.
A single review is €14.95, ten cost €99.95, and €24.95 a month buys three, with unused reviews rolling over. There's no free plan, and Reviewer has no free trial. Thesify's FAQ rules out writing your paper, though Coauthor, its newer workspace, has agents that draft.

Thesify reviewer, signed in to a free account, before any document is uploaded. Best for: Graduate students who want rubric feedback on a thesis chapter.
5. Paperpal
Paperpal swaps the bundled grammar and plagiarism tools for ones built around academic writing. Its grammar and tone suggestions are trained on scholarly edits, plagiarism checks compare your text against 99B+ sources, and it works in Word, Google Docs and Overleaf.
The free plan is small: 200 grammar edits a month, five paraphrase or AI-review uses a day, and lite plagiarism and AI-detection reports. Paid prices only appear once the pricing page loads them for your region. It can also draft from your sources when asked. Its Trustpilot praise centres on the AI-detection checks, though Paperpal invited most of those reviewers.

Paperpal editor on its built-in sample document, signed in to a free account. Best for: Academic polish and a plagiarism check on a draft of your own.
6. Jenni AI
Jenni AI is the place for references you can trace. Its search covers 200M+ papers, it takes your PDFs or a Zotero or Mendeley library, and each AI-suggested sentence links to its location in the source PDF. GPTZero, which sells a detector, found its citations accurate in one short sample.
Its autocomplete can still write whole passages if you keep accepting, so set it to draw only on your library and keep your own hand on the text. Free gives 10 autocompletes a day and 5 chat messages; Plus is $12 a month. Several Trustpilot reviewers report renewals charged without notice.

Jenni AI editor, signed in to a free account. Best for: Writing with citations tied to the exact spot in your PDFs.
7. Paperguide
Paperguide suits research-heavy assignments. Its index of 200M+ papers spans PubMed, arXiv, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar; it links every claim to the exact sentence in the source, and says AI-written passages are never given invented references. Extract Data pulls details from many papers into a table where each value links back.
The free plan includes 2,000 AI credits and 4,000 words of plagiarism checks a month. Plus is $12 a month per seat, billed annually. Its AI Writer will draft from a research question, and its workflows are built for researchers and labs more than coursework essays.

Paperguide dashboard, signed in to a free account (the account name is removed). Best for: Research-heavy essays and literature reviews where every claim needs a source.

FAQ
- Is PerfectEssayWriter.ai free?
- You can run three essay generations without an account. A free account then adds 5,000 words a month, up to 1,500 words a generation, 5 grader reports and 3 AI detections, with no plagiarism checks and no Word or PDF export.
- What does PerfectEssayWriter.ai cost per year?
- It depends where you look. The price cards show $7.49, $13.33 and $18.33 a month on annual billing, while the pricing FAQ lists $49.80, $83.88 and $119.88 a year. Plans auto-renew, so check the checkout page before you pay.
- Does the Essay Humanizer make an essay safe to hand in?
- It's sold “to reduce AI detection signals”. That changes a detector score, not who wrote the essay, and authorship is what an integrity policy is about.
- Which alternatives check whether references are real?
- Trinka's Citation Checker validates a reference list against Crossref and flags hallucinated sources. Jenni AI and Paperguide link a citation to the passage it rests on, so you can read it. EthiWrite only cites sources already in your Library.
