Jenni AI vs Writefull for students: which one earns its place?

If you write in Overleaf and English isn't your first language, Writefull is the one to look at. It checks your sentences inside the LaTeX source with models trained on published papers. If you need sources found, cited and woven into a draft, it can't help you, and Jenni AI can.

They overlap less than the search suggests. One is a drafting tool with a paper library attached, the other a language checker that leaves sources alone.

Sources and citations

Jenni AI takes papers from PDF uploads, Zotero, Mendeley or its own search of 200M+ papers, and formats citations in 10,000+ styles. Its AI-suggested sentences connect to their location in the source PDF, so you can go back and see what the paper actually said.

Writefull doesn't find, manage or format sources. The nearest thing it has is Writefull Cite, which flags sentences that look like they need a citation but have none. That's a good habit check, but Cite is sold to institutions only, so you'd only get it through your institution.

Who writes the sentences

With Jenni, the AI does a lot of it. The autocomplete suggests one sentence after another, and in GPTZero's review a 250-word introduction came together mostly from accepted suggestions; an AI detector flagged all of it (GPTZero sells a detector of its own). You can limit autocomplete to your library, which keeps it tied to your papers but doesn't make the sentences yours.

The same reviewer found Jenni's citations accurate in a short sample, but the autocomplete text read as AI-written and needed heavy rewriting. Time spent fixing suggestions is time you could have spent writing, so judge it on your own pace.

Writefull mostly edits sentences you wrote. Its Abstract Generator, Title Generator and Ask AI produce new text when asked, though, and the site now promotes a separate product, Papers AI, to “Draft the whole manuscript”. So an editing tool is the core, with drafting sold next door.

Feedback on your English

Writefull's language feedback comes from models trained on published papers. In Overleaf it checks the LaTeX source directly and can generate LaTeX tables and equations. LaTeX users value that it understands Overleaf source, and one user's informal grammar test ranked it alongside Grammarly. Others in the same thread found suggestions wrong or intrusive: correcting maths as if it were prose, adding a serial comma to British English, or twisting the meaning.

Jenni AI counts Reviews in its plans (three free, ten a month on Plus, unlimited on Pro) without describing what a Review looks at, so there's no fair comparison to draw on feedback. Its AI chat, which answers questions about your library with citations, is the closer match to what it does well.

Privacy

Writefull says it never stores your text or uses it to train its AI, and asks your consent before sending text to third-party AI services. For unpublished research, that statement is a reason to pick it. Nothing on this page covers how Jenni AI handles your text, so read its privacy policy yourself if that matters to you.

Prices and free plans

Writefull Premium is US$21 a month billed monthly or US$150 a year billed annually, for unlimited edits and tools under fair use. The free plan is a limited quota of each feature, and some users report hitting the daily quota fast. Others say they were charged after cancelling and struggled to find the unsubscribe option.

Labs get a separate option. Writefull's Group plan is US$285 a year for two seats as shown, scales to 100 users and is billed annually only; institutions get a quote. If your department already pays for it, ask before you buy your own.

On Jenni AI, Plus costs $12 a month and Pro $29. There's an annual discount whose price isn't shown, so check which billing period you're looking at before comparing it with Writefull's yearly figure. The free plan allows 10 autocompletes a day, 10 PDF uploads and 5 AI chat messages. Trustpilot's most common Jenni complaint is billing: renewals without notice and refused refunds.

Which should you choose?

Choose Jenni AI if you need to find papers, cite them in 10,000+ styles and draft with suggestions linked back to the PDF. It's the tool for the research-and-write stage.

Choose Writefull if you've written the text yourself and want academic-style language edits inside Word or Overleaf, from a company that says it doesn't store your text. Try the free quota before paying for Premium.

EthiWrite, our tool, sits between these two: sources and feedback, but no drafting engine. Its Library takes PDFs, OpenAlex papers, web pages and books, and it won't write paragraphs from a prompt. Its paper search covers OpenAlex alone, not a commercial database.
