Paperguide vs Smodin: whose references can you check?

Both will hand you a draft with references in it. Only one tells you where the references come from. Paperguide links every claim to the exact sentence in a source paper. Smodin says its writer can find high-quality sources but doesn't say where they come from.

For anything you'll be marked on, that's the difference that matters. Smodin's plans also sell a humanizer pitched at getting past AI detectors, which puts it in a different category.

Where the references come from

Paperguide's pool is 200M+ papers from four indexes (PubMed, arXiv, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar) plus whatever's in your library, and it can cite from both in one document. Its stated rule is that AI-written passages never carry made-up references. For managing them, it pulls libraries in from Zotero or Mendeley and handles 1,000+ citation styles.

Smodin says it can find sources and add references in APA or MLA in one click. It also claims its writer makes facts, data and statistics “100% accurate” without saying how. A Reddit user says its references “need a second look”, and other users say generated references and facts need checking by hand.

The same users' complaints go a step further: one paying reviewer reports inconsistent results for the same document. With Paperguide you can at least follow each claim to the sentence it rests on and decide for yourself. Its reviewers rate the literature search and data extraction, and credit support with fixing a Zotero connection quickly.

How much it writes, and the humanizer

Smodin's AI Writer drafts essays, articles and research papers from a topic, with your choice of style, tone and length, and expands the next section on request. Its plans promise you can “write full essays with simple prompts”. The writer FAQ does add a line asking you to follow your institution's academic integrity policies.

Then there's the humanizer. Smodin's plans promise to “detect and bypass top AI detectors”, and its humanizer page calls the result “undetectable”. Submitting that text as your own is an academic-integrity risk, and no promise about detectors changes that.

Paperguide also writes: its AI Writer turns a research question into a cited draft. The difference is the other mode it offers: writing the piece yourself with the agent alongside you.

Feedback and checking tools

Smodin bundles a lot into one subscription: AI chat, an AI content detector, a humanizer, a plagiarism checker, a rewriter, a summarizer and a translator alongside the writer. Positive Trustpilot reviews mostly praise its quick summaries and help tidying wording, not the essay writer.

Paperguide's checks point at the literature, not your prose. It runs systematic reviews with dual independent screening and a PRISMA diagram, pulls data from many papers into a table where every value links to its source, and offers plagiarism checks up to 4,000 words a month on the free plan. Neither describes feedback on the argument of a draft.

Prices, free use and the trust question

On annual billing, Smodin's plans cost less: Starter is $10 a month and Premium $16, against Paperguide's Plus at $12 a month per seat and Pro at $29. Month to month, Smodin Starter is $12.99 and Premium $19.99. Paperguide advertises its yearly billing as saving 41% over monthly.

Free use is where Paperguide is clearer. Its free plan gives 2,000 AI credits a month. Smodin's tools can be tried without signing up, but its pricing page lists only the two paid plans and doesn't publish free limits.

Read Smodin's ratings with care. Its site shows a 4.8/5 rating citing Trustpilot, but Trustpilot says that rating is unavailable due to a breach of its guidelines and that it has removed fake reviews for the company. Billing is the most common complaint: users describe being charged for a full year when they expected monthly billing. Paperguide's complaints run to crashes, slow PDF uploads and results some found unhelpful for assignments.

Which should you choose?

Choose Paperguide if you're working from research papers and want every claim tied to a sentence you can check. It's built for literature and systematic reviews, so it may be more than you need for a short essay.

Choose Smodin if you want an AI draft plus rewriting, summarizing and translating under one subscription, and you're prepared to verify every fact and source yourself. Don't use its humanizer on anything you submit.

If neither fits because you'd rather write the essay yourself, EthiWrite is our tool for that. It cites only from sources in your Library and won't write paragraphs from a prompt, so it's slower if you want a draft produced for you.

FAQ

Is it safe to use Smodin's humanizer for an essay?
Its plans promise to bypass top AI detectors, including “Turnitin-level detection”. Submitting humanized AI text as your own is an academic-integrity risk whatever a detector says.
Which is cheaper, Paperguide or Smodin?
On annual billing, Smodin Starter is $10 a month and Paperguide Plus is $12 a month per seat. Smodin's monthly Starter price is $12.99; Paperguide's listed prices are annual.
Where does Smodin get its sources?
It doesn't say. Smodin says the writer can find high-quality sources and cite them in APA or MLA, but not where they come from, and users say its references need checking by hand.
Can I try Smodin without an account?
Smodin says its detector, humanizer, plagiarism checker and writer can be tried with no sign-up. It doesn't publish the free limits, and its pricing page lists only paid plans.
Is Paperguide good for undergraduate essays?
It can be, but it's aimed at literature and systematic reviews for researchers and labs, and some reviewers found its results unhelpful for university assignments. Try the free plan on a real assignment first.
