Paperguide vs Trinka: research platform or language checker?

A bad reference can sink a thesis chapter, and these two tools come at that problem from opposite sides. Paperguide tries to stop it happening: each claim is linked to the precise sentence it rests on in a paper. Trinka checks a reference list after the fact, validating it against Crossref and flagging retracted, hallucinated and predatory sources.

Beyond references they barely overlap. Paperguide is a research platform for literature and systematic reviews. Trinka is a grammar and academic style checker for text you've already written. Pick by what's missing: the research, or the polish.

Getting references right

Paperguide looks for papers in PubMed, arXiv, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, 200M+ in total, as well as in your library, and can cite from both in the same document. It also states that it never invents references for passages its AI writes. Its reference manager imports from Zotero or Mendeley and switches between 1,000+ citation styles.

Trinka doesn't supply sources. It works on the references you already have: the Citation Checker validates them, and the Citation Formatter formats them. Both run on credits, and the free plan gets 4 a month, so heavy reference checking means paying.

Drafting from a research question, or rewriting a sentence

Paperguide's AI Writer starts from a research question and generates a draft grounded in citations. If you'd rather keep the writing, you can draft yourself with its agent alongside you, which is the mode to use if your course limits AI-written text.

Trinka mainly corrects and paraphrases your text, but it also offers “Write & Rewrite with AI”, capped by plan. The free plan allows 5 AI writing requests, Premium 25 a month and Premium Plus 1,000 a month. It won't structure an argument for you; it works on what you've written.

Language feedback

Trinka checks grammar, punctuation and academic style, and paid plans add style-guide corrections for APA, AMA, ACS, AGU and IEEE. On Trustpilot, reviewers say it improved the grammar and academic tone of their manuscripts and theses.

It misses things, though. Originality.ai, which sells its own grammar checker, tested it and found it caught many basic and advanced errors but let through misspellings such as “bussiness” and “atract”. Use it as a second pair of eyes, not the last one.

Nothing on this page describes grammar or language feedback in Paperguide. Its free plan includes plagiarism checks up to 4,000 words a month, and its research tools, such as data extraction where every value links to its source statement, are about the evidence rather than the sentences.

Where your text lives

Trinka comes to your document: it works in Microsoft Word, in the browser, as a Windows app and on LaTeX files. If your thesis holds data you can't share, its Confidential Data plan, at $300 a year, promises no data storage, instant data deletion, no AI training on your text and an offline grammar app.

Paperguide works from its own library instead. Your papers arrive through Zotero or Mendeley imports and PDF uploads. Reviewers have flagged friction there: one says PDF uploads are slow, and another found the site blocked by antivirus software until Paperguide had it removed.

What a year costs

On yearly billing, Trinka's two main plans both cost less than Paperguide's cheapest. Premium is $48 a year and Premium Plus $125. Paperguide's Plus is $12 a month per seat, billed annually, which comes to $144 for the year, and Pro is $29 a month per seat. Trinka's $48 is a discount, shown as 40% off a listed $80, and Premium is $20 billed monthly.

Both have free plans. Trinka's Basic plan never expires: 5,000 words of writing help, 5 AI writing requests and 4 credits a month, with grammar in lite mode only. Its most common complaint is exactly those limits. Paperguide's free plan gives 2,000 AI credits a month across its Research Agent, reports and AI Writer, with limited searches and reference manager.

Which should you choose?

Choose Paperguide if you're still gathering the evidence: searching across several paper indexes, screening for a systematic review, extracting data and drafting with each claim tied to a source sentence.

Choose Trinka if the chapter is written and you want its grammar and academic style checked and its reference list validated, at a low yearly price. The free plan covers a short piece.

Neither tool here describes a critique of the argument itself. In EthiWrite, which we make, that's the job of Examiner Mode: it maps your argument and flags unsupported claims without rewriting your text. Its paper search covers OpenAlex alone, where Paperguide searches four indexes.

FAQ

Can Trinka detect fake references?
Yes: the Citation Checker tests your references against Crossref and warns you about retracted, hallucinated or predatory ones. It runs on credits.
Does Paperguide check grammar?
Nothing on this page describes a grammar checker in Paperguide. Its focus is search, systematic reviews, data extraction and its AI Writer. Trinka is the grammar tool of the two.
Which is cheaper, Paperguide or Trinka?
On yearly billing, Trinka Premium is $48 a year. Paperguide Plus is $12 a month per seat, billed annually.
Does Trinka work with LaTeX?
Yes. It works on LaTeX files as well as in Microsoft Word, the browser and a Windows app.
How large a systematic review can Paperguide handle?
