Paperpal vs Yomu AI: start from your draft, or from a prompt?

The question is who writes the first version. With Paperpal, mostly you: it's an editor that works on your text inside Word, Google Docs or Overleaf. With Yomu AI, the tool will, if you let it: describe the paper and it “writes a full, researched draft”.

Both find and cite sources, both keep your PDFs close, and both will produce text on request. Paperpal is the better fit if your course draws a hard line on AI-written work. Yomu AI fits if you want one editor that drafts, cites and reviews, and you accept the integrity questions that come with it.

Who holds the pen

Yomu AI writes for you by design. Beyond the full-draft flow, its Document Assistant helps “write entire sections”. Its ethics statement asks that it be used alongside a student's own writing, “not as a replacement for” it, which is advice the product itself makes easy to ignore.

Paperpal leans the other way without being editing-only. Its homepage offers to “Draft with suggestions grounded in your sources”, and the paraphraser restructures your sentences. On r/research, the reaction to Paperpal was doubt about AI editing in research writing, with warnings that it can blur your meaning.

Citation tools compared

On Paperpal's side, Research and Cite reaches 250M+ research articles, draws insights out of PDFs and formats citations in 10,000+ styles, alongside the references and PDFs you upload.

Yomu AI saves sources to a library you reuse across documents, chats with PDFs, images and web search, and finds, inserts and formats citations in 700+ styles through a tool powered by Sourcely. Paperpal states the higher style count. A review based on public information likes Yomu's all-in-one workspace but warns its citations still need checking against the sources.

Feedback: line edits or reviews you apply

Paperpal's feedback works at the sentence level and up: grammar and tone suggestions trained on scholarly edits, 30+ pre-submission checks against journal standards, and plagiarism checks against 99B+ sources. Its Trustpilot reviewers, mostly invited by Paperpal, praise the AI-detection checks in particular.

Yomu AI's Get Feedback, added in September 2026, runs focused academic reviews of your draft that you can preview and apply. Paid plans also let you pick among models from several AI providers for chat and editing. Applying feedback changes your text, so read it before accepting.

Prices: published against regional

Yomu AI shows its prices. Pro is $10 a month billed annually ($120 a year) or $21 month to month, capped at 1,000 AI actions a month. Ultra is $17 a month annually or $35 monthly, with no cap and frontier models.

Paperpal sells Prime and Pro by the month or the year and won't show a price until its page has loaded the one for your region. You'll have to open it to compare.

Paperpal is at least specific about what each tier includes. A Prime subscriber gets 20k grammar edits and 25k words of AI detection each month, with plagiarism and reference checks capped at 10k words; Pro removes the limits on grammar edits and AI detection. Yomu counts usage in AI actions, which makes the two hard to line up even once you know Paperpal's price.

Trying before paying

Paperpal has a free plan with no credit card: 200 grammar edits a month, five a day each of its AI writing tools and research Q&A, five files a month of chat with papers, and lite plagiarism and journal-fit reports. It's small for a full thesis.

Yomu AI lists no free plan for its editor, though the pricing FAQ says you can start for free to try the service, and it offers separate free tools such as an essay outline generator and citation generators. Reviews are scarce: its only Trustpilot review complains that the subscription renewed without notice.

Which should you choose?

Choose Paperpal if you're writing the paper yourself and want academic editing, plagiarism checks and a citation search inside Word, Google Docs or Overleaf. The free plan lets you try it on a chapter.

Choose Yomu AI if you want one editor that drafts sections, finds citations and reviews the result, with a choice of AI models, and you're ready to pay after the free start.

For an AI that stops at a sentence, EthiWrite is our take: its Autocomplete offers a sentence at a time, capped at about thirty words, and nothing goes in unless you accept it. It formats APA, MLA and Chicago only, a fraction of the styles either tool here covers.
