Writefull vs Yomu AI: polish your own writing, or have it drafted?

Decide first who is writing the paper. If it's you, Writefull is the better tool: it edits academic English in Word and Overleaf with models trained on published papers. If you want an AI to draft and cite for you, Yomu AI does that by design, and Writefull mostly doesn't.

Price won't decide it for you. Writefull Premium and Yomu Pro are both $21 a month on monthly billing.

Visit Yomu AI

An editor and a drafter

Writefull edits sentences you wrote. Beyond the language checker it has a paraphraser, title and abstract generators and LaTeX helpers; the Abstract Generator, Title Generator and Ask AI are the parts that produce new text. Its site also promotes a separate product, Papers AI, to “Draft the whole manuscript”.

Yomu AI is built to produce text. Its new-document flow “writes a full, researched draft” from your description of the paper, and the Document Assistant helps “write entire sections”. Its ethics statement says to use it with your own writing, “not as a replacement for” it. If your course limits AI-generated text, that's the line to watch.

Citations: one supplies them, one spots the gaps

Yomu cites from sources saved to your library, which you can reuse across documents, or from sources its Sourcely-powered search finds, and formats them in 700+ styles. A review based on public information liked having drafting, citations and a library in one workspace but warned that its citations still need checking against the sources.

Writefull, by contrast, won't find, manage or format a single source. What it does have is Writefull Cite, which flags sentences that need a citation and have none. That's sold to institutions only, so check whether your university has it.

Language feedback or a review of the draft

Writefull's feedback is about language, and it comes from models trained on published papers and tailored to academic writing. LaTeX users on r/academia value that it understands Overleaf source; others in the same thread found it correcting maths as prose or imposing a serial comma on British English.

Yomu's Get Feedback, added in September 2026, runs focused academic reviews of your draft that you can preview and apply. Applying a suggestion changes your text, so preview each one.

Where you write, and what happens to your text

Writefull works inside the tools researchers already use: Microsoft Word and Overleaf, where it checks language directly in LaTeX source and can generate tables and equations. It says it never stores your text or uses it to train its AI, and asks for consent before sending text to third-party AI services.

Yomu is its own editor, where you can chat with PDFs, images and web search. On paid plans you choose among models from several AI providers for chat and editing.

Matching monthly prices, different annual ones

On monthly billing, Writefull Premium and Yomu Pro are both $21, and Yomu Ultra is $35. On annual billing, Writefull Premium is US$150 a year, Yomu Pro $120 and Yomu Ultra $204. Writefull Premium is unlimited under fair use; Yomu Pro stops at 1,000 AI actions a month, and only Ultra is unlimited. A Writefull Group plan is US$285 a year for two seats.

Writefull has a free plan, a limited quota of each feature, and some users say they hit the daily quota quickly. Yomu lists no free plan for its editor, though its pricing FAQ says you can start for free to try it, and it offers separate free tools such as an essay outline generator and citation generators.

Watch the renewals on both. Some Writefull users report being charged after cancelling, and Yomu's only Trustpilot review complains that the subscription renewed without notice.

Which should you choose?

Choose Writefull if you write the paper yourself, in Word or Overleaf, and want academic language edits from a tool that says it doesn't keep your text. The free quota is limited, but enough to judge it.

Choose Yomu AI if you want sources, citations and drafting in one editor, plus feedback on the draft, and your course allows AI-written text. Try it free before you choose a plan.

Writefull leaves sources to you and Yomu will write the draft. If you want sources handled but the writing left to you, that's EthiWrite, the tool we make: it cites only from your Library, and its autocomplete stops at a sentence of about thirty words. Its paper search covers OpenAlex alone, not a commercial database.
