Trinka vs Writefull: choosing an academic language checker

This is a real contest: both are academic language checkers that work on text you wrote. Trinka is the better buy if you want your reference list checked and a lower annual price. Writefull is the pick if you write in Overleaf and want suggestions from models trained on published papers.

Where they plug in

Trinka runs in Microsoft Word, the browser, a Windows app and on LaTeX files. Writefull runs inside Word and inside Overleaf, where it checks language directly in LaTeX source and can also generate LaTeX tables and equations.

So both handle LaTeX. Writefull's Overleaf integration gets the attention on r/academia, where LaTeX users single it out, and one person's informal test ranked its grammar checking alongside Grammarly's. The same thread has complaints, though, about it correcting mathematics as if it were prose and imposing a serial comma on British English.

Checking references versus spotting missing ones

Neither will find sources for you. Trinka's Citation Checker works on the references you already have: it validates them against Crossref and flags retracted, hallucinated and predatory sources, and a Citation Formatter sits alongside it. Those tools spend credits.

Writefull doesn't touch your reference list at all; finding, managing and formatting sources is outside its job. Writefull Cite catches a different problem, a sentence that needs a citation and has none, but it's sold to institutions only. If you're an individual student, Trinka is the one with a reference check you can buy.

The quality of the corrections

On Trinka you get grammar, punctuation and academic-style checks, plus APA, AMA, ACS, AGU and IEEE style-guide corrections on paid plans. Trustpilot reviewers credit it with improving the English in manuscripts and theses. Originality.ai's test (Originality.ai sells a grammar checker) found it caught many errors but missed misspellings such as “bussiness” and “atract”.

Writefull's selling point is its training data: its language models were trained on published papers and tailored to academic writing. Neither tool is infallible, given Trinka's missed misspellings and Writefull's wrong calls on notation, so accept suggestions one at a time.

How much new text they'll write

Both are editors first with some drafting on the side. Trinka offers “Write & Rewrite with AI”, limited by monthly requests: 5 on the free plan, 25 on Premium and 1,000 on Premium Plus. Writefull's Abstract Generator, Title Generator and Ask AI produce new text when asked, and its site promotes a separate Papers AI product to “Draft the whole manuscript”. Language corrections change your wording, not your argument, but ask how your department treats them, and count an AI-generated abstract as AI-written text.

Privacy for unpublished work

Writefull says it never stores your text or uses it to train its AI, and asks for consent before sending text to third-party AI services. Trinka sells that kind of promise as a plan: Confidential Data, at $300 a year, offers no data storage, no AI training on your text, instant data deletion and an offline grammar app.

Price and the free plans

On annual billing Trinka costs less. Premium is $48 a year and Premium Plus, with double credits and 1,000 AI writing requests a month, is $125; Writefull Premium is US$150 a year. Only Trinka's Confidential Data plan, at $300, costs more. Writefull also lists Premium at US$21 a month and a Group plan at US$285 a year for two seats. Month to month, Trinka Premium is $20. Trinka's $48 and $300 are discounted yearly prices, shown as 40% off $80 and $500.

Trinka gives a number for each free limit: 5,000 words of writing help, 5 AI writing requests and 4 credits a month, with grammar in lite mode. Writefull marks each free feature “Limited” without a number. Users of both complain about running out: the free limits are Trinka's most common Trustpilot complaint, and some Writefull users say they hit the daily quota quickly.

Which should you choose?

Choose Trinka if you want academic grammar and style-guide corrections plus a check of your reference list for retracted or invented sources, at $48 a year. Start on the free Basic plan, which never expires.

Choose Writefull if you write in Overleaf or Word, want language edits trained on published research, and value a no-storage promise on your text. Try the free quota before paying US$150 a year.

Both tools assume the paper is already written. If you're earlier than that, EthiWrite, which we make, helps you build the argument from sources in your Library, and its Examiner Mode flags unsupported claims before you submit. Both Trinka and Writefull go further on language polish, and EthiWrite formats citations in APA, MLA and Chicago only.
